Immeln at Breanäs

Stories & Tips

Activities & walking

A big lake.
No grand plan.

What makes Immeln an appealing place to visit, and why not every island is open to visitors.

The Lake House rowing boat is on Rågebodasjön. Immeln is a separate outing.

At Immeln, a view of the water quickly becomes a view into the distance. Islands sit between the shores, bays disappear from sight, and suddenly staying here for a while seems a perfectly reasonable idea.

We would not treat the lake as a list of points to tick off in a day. A good access point, a little time and a clear decision about whether you want to stay on shore or actually go out on the water make a better beginning.

An easy beginning

Breanäs.
First, arrive.

Breanäs is one of the places on Immeln that we also feature in the swimming-spots article. For a first visit, we would begin there: walk to the shore, have a look and perhaps swim, if the weather and current water information are suitable.

If you only have an afternoon, there is no need to turn it into a paddling trip. Even from the shore, you can appreciate how different this lake feels from the smaller one outside the house. A picnic and a long look are an entire outing.

A sensitive island landscape

Not every island
is a picnic spot.

The County Administrative Board describes around 90 islands on Immeln, 41 of them protected. Landing on these islands is prohibited from 1 April to 31 August. In some areas, the protection boundaries also extend into the water. A small, quiet island is therefore by no means automatically somewhere to land.

Check the current protected-area map and rules before a trip. Keep away from nesting sites and follow the marked boundaries. A disturbance matters just as much when there are few people around.

Designated resting places have rules too. Fires are only permitted where allowed, and never during a fire ban. Do not simply gather fuel in a protected area.

If you want to go afloat

Less distance.
More in reserve.

A day paddling must suit your experience and the weather. Wind, waves and the return journey belong in the planning, not in a discussion on the last island. Arrange equipment and instruction with a provider who can actually supply them; we are not promising unverified hire or boat availability here.

The sensible option is often the shorter one. Allow enough time, use suitable buoyancy aids, make a sheltered plan and be willing to stay on shore in poor conditions. The lake is no less lovely for it. You are simply seeing it from another angle that day.

Our verdict

A day on Immeln can feel expansive even when the distance travelled is small.
