Workdays with a little distance

Get away.
With one thing in mind.

On focused days, realistic goals and breaks that do not immediately turn back into work.

Not a productivity formula. More a suggestion for arranging the working day a little differently.

A change of scene does not do the work for you. Convenient though that would be, it is unfortunately not true. What a different place can change is the way you make time for one thing.

We like the idea of spending a few days without trying to tackle everything at once. A piece of writing, a concept, a decision that always disappears behind the next appointment at home. The distance is not an achievement in itself. To begin with, it is simply an opportunity.

Before setting off

One goal.
Not your whole life.

For a short working stay, we would define an outcome that genuinely fits the time. Not ‘finally finish the entire project’, but clarify the structure, write a first draft or settle three unanswered questions.

That also means deciding what deliberately stays behind. If the usual calendar carries on unchanged, you may be sitting at a different window but working under the same conditions. Sometimes not everything can be moved. Then it helps to keep at least a few uninterrupted hours free.

During the day

Work.
Then actually take a break.

A break by the lake need not be filled with a podcast supplying the next work topic. You can simply go outside and hear nothing useful for a while. We find that harder than it sounds, and rather pleasant for precisely that reason.

There is no universal verdict on whether morning or afternoon is better for working. Plan around your own rhythm. What matters more is that food, movement and the end of the working day do not depend on there happening to be some time left over.

Back at home

Bring something back.
Other than files.

On the last day, we would briefly note what is finished, what remains open and the next small step. That way, the work does not disappear entirely into everyday life as soon as the computer is back on the table at home.

Perhaps the result was smaller than planned. Perhaps it was clearer. A good idea does not necessarily need a special place. It can simply help to give it a little undivided time somewhere.

Our verdict

The lake will not do the work for you. It does occasionally remind you that a working day is allowed to have limits.
