The seasons in Rågeboda
Different colours.
The same lake.
Why a stay need not depend on having swimming weather every day.
The photograph shows a real autumn at Rågebodasjön. Naturally, the colours and weather vary from year to year.
‘Off-season’ always sounds a little as though the real thing is already over, and you must make do with what is left. Looking at the lake in autumn, that seems a rather poor description.
The days become different. That is all. Not every day invites a swim, and an outing may require a waterproof. In return, the house is no longer simply where you come back to in the evening. It becomes a bigger part of the stay itself.
Stay outdoors
A short walk
is often enough.
We would not plan a major expedition every day in autumn. Sometimes a walk suits the day better, with no guilt about turning back when the rain gets heavier. Decent shoes and clothes that can cope with the weather are more useful than an ambitious daily plan.
Which paths are comfortable to walk depends on how wet they are and their condition. In woodland especially, we pay attention to signs and current conditions. Mushrooms are lovely to look at; a general holiday story is no substitute for reliable identification before putting them in a pan.
Settle in indoors
Have time.
Without a fallback programme.
A long afternoon in the house need not be a failed outing. Cooking something, reading, listening to music or simply lingering over breakfast may be the plan, not merely the emergency alternative.
For us, autumn includes exactly this permission not to be doing something all the time. If you like museums, consider a day in Älmhult. If you would rather stay beside the lake, you do not need a cultural alibi.

Plan with the weather
Have an idea.
Stay flexible.
We would begin a stay with two or three possibilities: a short walk outdoors, somewhere to visit and something enjoyable to do in the house. Then the calendar is not making all the decisions on its own; the weather gets a say too.
It is less spectacular than a packed itinerary. On the other hand, you need not end the evening feeling that you have forced the day to happen in spite of its conditions. You were simply here. That can be quite enough.
Our verdict
Autumn is not less of a holiday. It simply does not insist that you spend all of it outdoors.
